As the heat and humidity of our southern Summer moves in, visions of escape to cooler climates dance through my head. Places like Washington state, British Columbia and Maine hold a nearly mythical siren call for me. Reality on the ground is hot and sticky—temperature wise and even politically—locally and globally. How do we cool our emotions, cool the tension we might experience in our bodies, in our homes and that we see in our country—even across our planet. I pose that one of the ways to experience that ease is through community connection. Experiencing a community to support you—and where you can support others is such a gift. If there are community gatherings, women’s circles, community clean ups—any way in which you can meet others and connect this Summer, I hope it gives you light and feels like an avenue of renewal. Our community has a farmers market— which I’ve observed doubles as a big social gathering—and we have community clean ups where folks clean local woods and waterways and connect over their care for nature—along with other local events at libraries or community centers where it’s possible to meet others in person and connect. It seems to me that this Summer holds promise for change and I hope that by connecting with others in our communities, we can dream a more loving world into being. I love bringing people together to connect and on the Summer Solstice, our women’s circle will meet in our Red Tent to share food, to craft, share stories, wisdom and support for getting through all the different kinds of heat ahead.
